So this is actually pretty simple and is exactly how it sounds. An 80/20 split is when a promoter (which is you) splits the profits from on the door and advanced ticket sales with an artist. 80% goes to the artist and 20% goes to the promoter. This may seem a little steep however in this situation the artist is incentivised to encourage their fans to attend your event as the more people that come the more money they will make. This takes a lot of stress off of the promoter in regards to selling tickets and also means that if there are no net profits at the end of the night you don’t have to pay the artists which can decrease your losses significantly.

If you are confident that you can fill the venue regardless of how many people the artist brings then this probably isn’t the way to go and you could make a much higher profit by negotiating a flat fee rate with either the artist or their booking agent. If you are not sure what a booking agent is then why not check out my article on them and find out how from just a few phone calls booking agents can make more money than artists in a band!
